The problem by filtering by word is that language like japanese or chinese who doesn't seperate words will have problem and the main reason is that when using the grid layout, you want to have the exact same number of characters to achieve a nice layout.
If you want to change this you could use the child theme and modify the function in the child theme.

Normaly character excerpt makes text little bit weird.

Any chance the excerpt or content text would filter by words, except of characters.
