Can I sort the portfolio by category rather than by tag? I don't want tags to be the sorting criteria but it seems the only way that I can get portfolio filters to work.
Unfortunately this is not possible and this is not a easy thing to change, to do this you would have to modify a lot of files including php and javascript.

In the future, categories would be a much more reliable and useful sorting option and seems to be the default in most themes.
